Edy Modica is taking her distinctive brand of comedy from supporting roles and short films to the spotlight with her debut stand-up special, I’M JUST LIKE YOU (AND IT SUCKS).
The New York-based comedian, filmmaker, actor and writer’s first comedy special premiered on VEEPS June 26 and is building toward a wider release on YouTube in September. The project gives audiences a chance to see the performer beyond the television and film roles that have helped make her one of the comedy world’s emerging names.
Modica first gained widespread attention for her performance in the Emmy-nominated Amazon series Jury Duty. Her work on the breakout comedy earned her a spot on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of “20 Supporting Actors Who Stole the Scene” in 2023.
But acting is only one part of Modica’s creative résumé.
As a filmmaker, she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Film Independent Film” in 2022 following her debut short film, NICOLE. The film was also selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick and helped establish Modica as a filmmaker with a distinct comedic voice.
Her work has continued across television, film and digital platforms. Modica has appeared in Apple TV+’s Shrinking, HBO’s High Maintenance and HBO Max’s Made for Love. She also appeared in Tracy Morgan’s Paramount+ comedy series Crutch.
On the big screen, Modica stars in Shawn Simmons’ Eenie Meanie, alongside Samara Weaving, and recently wrapped production on Netflix’s upcoming Cameron Diaz-led feature Bad Day.
Her comedy career has also been gaining attention. Vulture named Modica one of its “Comedians You Should and Will Know,” recognizing her growing presence in New York’s comedy scene and online.
Now, I’M JUST LIKE YOU (AND IT SUCKS) gives Modica an opportunity to bring those different creative worlds together through stand-up.
The special is produced by Irony Point, the production company behind Chris Fleming’s recent special and the acclaimed comedy series I Think You Should Leave.
Modica is also developing a half-hour comedy pilot for HBO based on her short film NICOLE, continuing her work as a writer and filmmaker while expanding her profile as a performer.
With a résumé that moves easily between independent filmmaking, television acting and stand-up comedy, Modica is building a career that doesn’t fit neatly into one category.
Her debut special could be another step in that evolution, introducing audiences to the comedian behind some of her memorable screen performances while giving established fans a longer look at her voice, perspective and comedic style.
