A historic Pennsylvania railroad is offering visitors a new way to experience its scenic tracks. The East Broad Top Railroad (EBT), a 150-year-old narrow-gauge railroad in Rockhill Furnace, has launched a new rail bike adventure through Allegheny Rail Riders, combining the history of rail travel with a relaxed outdoor experience.
The inaugural rail bike departures began in September, with trips continuing throughout October. Departures are scheduled for weekends, along with select Fridays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, giving visitors additional opportunities to experience the region’s fall foliage. Trips depart at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
The approximately one-hour, three-mile round-trip journey follows a quiet section of the historic railroad away from busy roads and modern traffic. Along the route, riders pass the ruins of the Rockhill Iron Furnace, travel alongside the waters of Blacklog Creek and move through farmland and forest surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.
Designed as a soft-adventure experience, the rail bikes are suitable for couples, families and outdoor enthusiasts. The custom-built vehicles feature electric-assist motors that can provide additional help during the ride, making the experience accessible to a range of riders.
Each rail bike can accommodate up to four people. The first and last rail bikes in each departure will have a Rail Bike pilot aboard, while larger groups will be divided among multiple bikes.
Tickets are $20 per rail bike, making the experience an affordable way to explore both the railroad’s history and the surrounding landscape. The new attraction also adds another dimension to the ongoing revival of the East Broad Top Railroad, which has become a destination for rail enthusiasts and visitors interested in historic transportation.
An upcoming combination experience will give visitors the opportunity to pair a rail bike ride with a traditional train excursion and shop tour. Dates, ticket details and pricing for that offering have not yet been announced.
The rail bike experience arrives as the East Broad Top Railroad continues to attract attention for its preservation efforts and renewed visitor experiences. For those looking to enjoy Pennsylvania’s autumn scenery while experiencing a piece of railroad history, the new rail bikes offer a unique way to get moving.
Reservations are strongly recommended. Visitors can find information about schedules, tickets and upcoming experiences at East Broad Top Railroad or by calling 814-447-3285.
