National Grandparents Day is on September 7th, 2025, the perfect moment to celebrate not just timeless music but enduring legacies — those passed down through song, story, and service.
Bill Withers’ cherished song “Grandma’s Hands” has been transformed into a deeply moving 32-page children’s book, created by his wife, Marcia Withers, and daughter, Kori Withers, and released in July 2023.

A special Grandparents’ Day webinar will take place on Sunday, September 7, at 4 p.m. EST, celebrating the legacy of Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Bill Withers. The event will feature Marcia Withers, Bill’s widow, and Joel Harper, co-producer of the children’s book Grandma’s Hands, inspired by Withers’ iconic song of the same name. They will discuss the story behind the book, the meaning of the song, and the importance of honoring grandparents. Viewers must register to attend, and a confirmation email with login details will be sent after registration.
The story of Grandma’s Hands reminds us that legacy lives in the moments of love we share and the ways we uplift others. Marcia and Kori continue Bill’s mission — not just through art but through their dedication to fostering creativity, community engagement, and support for future storytellers and songwriters.

Originally released in 1971 on Just As I Am, “Grandma’s Hands” remains one of Bill’s most celebrated works, reaching No. 18 on the Best Selling Soul Singles chart and No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Illustrated by award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie, the children’s book beautifully captures the warmth, comfort, and unconditional love expressed in Bill’s lyrics — a touching tribute to grandmothers everywhere.
Continuing the Legacy Through Art, Service & Community
The Withers family has extended Bill’s values beyond the book:
- Marcia Withers serves on the board of the Stuttering Association of the Young (SAY) and accepted an award for Bill from Generations United in June 2025.
- Kori Withers, an accomplished singer-songwriter, continues honoring her father’s spirit through music and service, including her performances at benefits for FreeHorse Arts and her role on its board.
A book, a performance, a scholarship — this is how love endures. Happy Grandparents Day!
