The Guggenheim New York is set to showcase a landmark exhibition, Gabriele Münter: Contours of a World, running through April 26. This U.S. presentation marks the first monographic exhibition of the German Expressionist painter in nearly thirty years, offering an unprecedented look at Münter’s contributions to early 20th century modernism.
The exhibition highlights over fifty of Münter’s paintings alongside nineteen early photographs, some of which were taken during her travels in the southern and midwestern United States at the turn of the twentieth century. These photographs, appearing in the U.S. for the first time, offer insight into the artist’s evolving vision and her deep engagement with both place and people. The selection spans her heightened Expressionist work from roughly 1908 to 1920 while also acknowledging her later artistic developments, allowing visitors to trace the trajectory of her practice over decades.
Münter was a pivotal figure in the avant-garde circles of early modernism, co-founding the influential group Der Blaue Reiter with Wassily Kandinsky. Her work demonstrates a mastery of color, form, and emotional resonance, blending personal experience with broader cultural and artistic movements. Paintings like Head of a Young Girl (Junges Mädchen) exemplify her ability to merge psychological insight with formal innovation, providing a window into the intimate and expressive qualities that define her oeuvre.
Complementing the exhibition, the Guggenheim has curated robust programming, including gallery talks led by museum experts and guest collaborators, as well as a series of film screenings. These programs are designed to deepen public engagement with Münter’s life and work, exploring her influence on Expressionism and her role as a trailblazer for women in early modern art.
The exhibition is made possible through the support of the Gabriele Münter and Johannes Eichner Foundation, Munich, and the Städtische Galerie am Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau München, with additional support from the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne, the National Endowment for the Arts, and generous contributions from the Huo Family Foundation, Claire Foerster and Daniel Bernstein, Angela Lustig and Dale Taylor, as well as the Kate Cassidy Foundation and Every Page Foundation.
Gabriele Münter: Contours of a World offers a rare opportunity to explore the artist’s innovative vision and enduring legacy, reaffirming her place at the forefront of modernist art. The exhibition invites visitors to experience the emotional intensity, stylistic experimentation, and historical significance of Münter’s work, celebrating a figure whose contributions continue to shape the narrative of twentieth-century art.
