Universal Music Group has announced a major collaboration with NVIDIA that aims to reshape how billions of fans discover, create, and engage with music through artificial intelligence. The partnership brings together one of the world’s largest music catalogs with advanced AI infrastructure to develop new tools designed to benefit both artists and listeners while promoting responsible AI use across the industry.
The initiative will focus on research and development that enhances music discovery, strengthens artist protection, and creates more interactive fan experiences. Executives say the goal is to move beyond traditional search and playlist recommendations toward deeper, more personalized engagement powered by AI understanding of music’s emotional and cultural elements.
Central to the collaboration is NVIDIA’s Music Flamingo model, an advanced AI system built on the company’s Audio Flamingo architecture. Unlike earlier music-recognition tools, the model can analyze full-length tracks — up to 15 minutes — capturing harmony, lyrics, structure, timbre, and emotional tone with high precision. The technology uses sophisticated reasoning to interpret musical elements such as chord progressions and storytelling arcs, allowing listeners to explore songs in more meaningful ways.
For fans, this could mean discovering music based on mood, narrative themes, or cultural context rather than simple genre tags. For artists, it opens new opportunities to present their work, reach audiences, and analyze creative output with greater depth.
The companies also plan to establish a dedicated artist incubator where musicians, songwriters, and producers will help design and test AI-powered creative tools. By involving creators directly, the partnership aims to ensure technology enhances originality rather than producing generic automated content.
UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge described the agreement as a groundbreaking relationship between the world’s leading music and technology companies, emphasizing the importance of protecting copyright and human creativity while embracing innovation. NVIDIA executives echoed that sentiment, highlighting safeguards to ensure proper attribution and compensation for rightsholders.
The collaboration will also draw on UMG’s existing studio network, including iconic facilities such as Abbey Road Studios and Capitol Studios, where creative teams will experiment with new AI workflows.
As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms entertainment, both companies say their shared mission is to ensure technology strengthens — rather than replaces — human artistry. If successful, the partnership could redefine the global music experience, creating smarter discovery tools, deeper fan connections, and new creative possibilities for artists worldwide.
