Molière in the Park (MIP), the Brooklyn-based theater company known for bringing free classical theater to diverse audiences, is celebrating a major achievement after receiving two nominations for the 2026 Drama Desk Awards for its acclaimed production of The Imaginary Invalid.
Founding Executive Director Lucie Tiberghien earned a nomination for her adaptation of Molière’s beloved comedy, while composer Jonathan Moore was recognized for his original score. The nominations highlight the company’s ongoing commitment to reimagining classic works for contemporary audiences and making high-quality theater accessible to all.
The recognition is particularly significant because The Imaginary Invalid is the only Brooklyn-based production nominated in the Outstanding Adaptation category this year. The distinction underscores the growing influence of Brooklyn’s theater community within New York City’s vibrant performing arts landscape.
Tiberghien’s adaptation of the 17th-century satire brought fresh energy to Molière’s classic tale, which follows a hypochondriac whose obsession with illness leads to a series of comedic misunderstandings and family conflicts. Through a contemporary lens, the production preserved the humor and social commentary of the original while making it resonate with modern audiences.
“Being recognized alongside so many extraordinary artists is an honor,” Tiberghien said in a statement. “This nomination reflects the incredible work of our collaborators and our shared belief that world-class theater belongs in every community. To see a Brooklyn production represented in this way is especially meaningful.”
Moore’s original music played a key role in shaping the production’s atmosphere and storytelling. Serving as both composer and cellist, he created a score that complemented the play’s humor and emotional depth while enhancing the company’s distinctive artistic approach.
“Serving as composer and cellist for Molière in the Park has been a journey,” Moore said. “Create art for yourself and for the people. I am honored to be recognized by the Drama Desk Committee.”
Since its founding, Molière in the Park has become a cultural fixture in Brooklyn by presenting free performances that welcome audiences from all backgrounds. The company’s productions aim to remove barriers to theater attendance while fostering community engagement through the performing arts.
The Drama Desk nominations mark another milestone in the organization’s growth and reinforce its reputation as a leading force in accessible theater. For MIP, the recognition is not only a celebration of artistic excellence but also a testament to the power of community-centered cultural programming.
As awards season continues, the nominations shine a spotlight on Brooklyn’s thriving arts scene and the artists dedicated to bringing ambitious, inclusive theater to audiences across New York City.
