In today’s workplace, leadership is often measured by titles, authority and the number of people reporting to an executive. But leadership expert and executive coach Dr. Sam Adeyemi believes those traditional metrics miss the true mark of effective leadership.
According to Adeyemi, the greatest leaders are not those who accumulate followers but those who empower others to become leaders themselves.
“Great leadership is not measured by how many people follow you,” Adeyemi said. “It is measured by how many people are empowered to lead because of you.”
The Atlanta-based leadership strategist, who was born in Nigeria, has spent decades coaching executives and entrepreneurs on building organizations that thrive by developing talent from within. His latest book, SHIFTS: 6 Steps to Transform Your Mindset and Elevate Your Leadership, outlines a framework designed to help leaders inspire growth, cultivate innovation and create lasting organizational impact.
Adeyemi’s philosophy comes at a time when companies are placing greater emphasis on employee development, succession planning and workplace engagement. Rather than focusing solely on achieving short-term business goals, he encourages leaders to invest in helping others realize their full potential.
One of his central principles is that leadership should be multiplied, not concentrated.
“If those who follow you never grow, never lead, and never develop others, then leadership has stopped with you,” he said.
A key part of that process involves empowering employees through trust and responsibility. Instead of micromanaging every decision, Adeyemi encourages leaders to delegate meaningful authority, allowing team members to solve problems, make decisions and build confidence in their own abilities.
He also advocates focusing on people’s strengths instead of spending excessive time correcting weaknesses. By identifying and developing an individual’s natural talents, organizations can unlock higher levels of performance while increasing employee satisfaction and engagement.
Another important shift, he says, is moving away from transactional management, where employees are viewed simply as resources to accomplish tasks. Instead, leaders should see team members as individuals with untapped potential and help them bridge the gap between where they are today and where they are capable of going.
Those concepts form the foundation of Adeyemi’s SHIFTS model, which stands for See, Hear, Insight, Formulate, Transform and Succeed. The six-step framework is designed to help leaders change both their mindset and their approach to leading others.
In addition to his coaching and speaking engagements, Adeyemi recently launched 365 Days with Dr. Sam, a daily five-minute audio program focused on leadership, personal growth and decision-making.
As organizations continue adapting to changing workplace expectations, Adeyemi believes the leaders who will have the greatest long-term impact are those who invest in developing future leaders rather than simply managing followers.
His message is simple: leadership is measured not by the size of your team, but by the number of people who grow because of your influence.
