A beach bar in the Maldives has received a colorful makeover, thanks to a local artist whose playful underwater-inspired mural is bringing a new creative experience to Eri Maldives.

The luxury island resort recently launched its first Beach Shack Takeover, an ongoing artistic collaboration designed to reimagine spaces throughout the property through the work of Maldivian and international artists. For its debut, the resort invited Maldivian artist Ismail Maaish to transform its popular Beach Shack outdoor snack bar into a vibrant celebration of marine life and island culture.

Over four days, Maaish created an original mural inspired by the underwater world surrounding the resort. The centerpiece is a bow-tied, sunglasses-wearing octopus mixing cocktails, surrounded by schools of colorful fish. The character adds a whimsical personality to the beachside gathering spot while reflecting the resort’s connection to its surrounding reef.

Guests had an opportunity to watch Maaish work on the mural during the weekend, offering a firsthand look at his creative process and the relationship between contemporary art and Maldivian cultural storytelling.

With a background in architecture, Maaish works across several artistic mediums, including ink, watercolor, acrylic and large-scale murals. His work frequently explores Maldivian folklore, island life, cultural identity and the natural environment through expressive characters, bold colors and distinctive visual details.

The Beach Shack project is part of Pulse Resorts’ KULA Art Initiative. KULA, meaning colors in Dhivehi, provides a platform for local artists to showcase their work and cultural perspectives to a broader audience. The initiative encompasses traditional and digital art forms while creating opportunities for both emerging and established creatives.

According to Eri Maldives General Manager Haroon Mohamed, the collaboration reflects the resort’s commitment to connecting guests with the island’s natural environment and cultural identity while providing meaningful opportunities for Maldivian artists.

The Beach Shack Takeover is intended to become an evolving creative platform, with future collaborations potentially including live painting, workshops, artist talks, collective craft projects, installations and pop-up exhibitions throughout the island.

For Eri Maldives, the initiative adds another dimension to the guest experience, encouraging visitors to discover the destination through its art, people and natural surroundings.

The octopus mural is more than a decorative addition to a beachside bar. It represents an effort to bring local creativity into everyday island life while celebrating the marine environment that makes the Maldives a distinctive destination.
