Groundbreaking Musical ‘Mexodus’ Brings Untold Story of Freedom Seekers to NYC Stage

Audible and P3 Productions will premiere the critically acclaimed musical Mexodus in New York City, with previews starting Sept. 9 and opening night September 18 at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre. Written and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, and directed by David Mendizábal, Mexodus tells the untold story of enslaved people who escaped south into Mexico, following a freedom seeker and an unlikely ally.

The show blends hip-hop, reggaeton, gospel, jazz, and soul, using live-looping techniques to create a vibrant, immersive soundscape. Critics have praised the musical as “genius in motion” and a “masterpiece in storytelling,” highlighting the performers’ lyrical skill and inventive musical approach. Previous productions at New York Stage and Film, Baltimore Center Stage, Mosaic Theater Company, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre garnered widespread acclaim.

Audible will record Mexodus for an upcoming Audible Original release, allowing global audiences to experience the powerful story and dynamic music beyond the theater. Jeremy Blocker, Audible Head of Live Creative Producing, emphasized the company’s commitment to “amplifying bold, innovative voices to the widest possible audience,” noting the production’s “thrilling sonic world” and its exploration of a rarely told chapter of American history.

Tickets for the first preview on Sept. 9 are $35, and a portion of early performances from September 10–13 are also available at this price. The production features a creative team including Riw Rakkulchon (Scenic Design), David Mendizábal (Costume Design), Mextly Couzin (Lighting Design), Mikhail Fiksel (Sound Design), Johnny Moreno (Projections Design), Tony Thomas (Choreography), and Claire Yenson, C.S.A. (Casting). Production supervision is provided by Beacon Theatrical Services, with general management by ShowTown Theatricals.

Mexodus highlights the resilience, courage, and solidarity of those who sought freedom along an alternative path of the Underground Railroad. Quijada and Robinson, who co-wrote, co-created, and perform in the musical, underscore the power of music and storytelling to connect history to contemporary audiences.

Audible Theater’s Minetta Lane Theatre has previously hosted productions such as Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, Creditors, The Pansy Craze, and Patton Oswalt’s stand-up show Black Coffee and Ice Water, further establishing the venue as a hub for innovative and thought-provoking performances.

Tickets for Mexodus are available now at www.AudiblexMinetta.com, with the show set to expand its reach later as an Audible Original, giving theatergoers and listeners alike the opportunity to engage with this groundbreaking musical.
