Arctic Adventures has unveiled the 2025 Azure Ice Cave at Sólheimajökull, offering travelers a rare opportunity to explore one of Iceland’s most stunning natural ice formations. This newly accessible ice cave invites adventurers to hike across a glacier and step inside walls glowing in vivid shades of blue and aquamarine.
Sólheimajökull Glacier, located just 2.5 hours from Reykjavík, is one of Iceland’s most accessible ice tongues, famed for its dramatic ridges, deep crevasses, and streaks of volcanic ash. Ice caves like the Azure are formed annually by meltwater and shifting ice, but their appearance is temporary. Some caves vanish completely in spring, while others reemerge in different forms, making each seasonal discovery uniquely spectacular.
The Azure Ice Cave of 2025 is the highlight of this year’s glacier tours. Visitors join certified glacier guides at the Sólheimajökull parking lot, donning helmets, harnesses, crampons, and carrying ice axes to traverse the icy terrain safely. Guides lead small groups across the glacier, providing detailed briefings on its ever-changing landscape and ensuring safe access to the cave’s interior.
“We’ve been observing this cave for years, though it is rarely accessible. We had a brief chance to enter it in 2019, and now we are once again gifted with the opportunity to visit it,” said Francesco Li Vigni, Glacier Operations Manager at Arctic Adventures.
The total hike spans roughly 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) at a moderate pace, suitable for participants in good physical condition. Guests must be at least 12 years old, and children are required to be accompanied by an adult. The tour lasts approximately four hours, allowing ample time for photography and exploration within the cave.
What participants can expect:
- Expert guides offering safety briefings and insights on glacier dynamics
- Small group experiences for a personal, attentive adventure

The Azure Ice Cave will be open seasonally from September 2025 to April 2026, though its size, shape, and accessibility may change from year to year.
