A new daytime dining destination has arrived in La Jolla, bringing together coastal design, locally inspired cuisine, and a workspace-friendly atmosphere. Playa Kitchen, created by Clique Hospitality, is now open at Torrey Pines Science Park, offering a fresh take on the modern café rooted in its surroundings.

Set against the backdrop of Torrey Pines Golf Course, the 3,700-square-foot space leans heavily into its environment. Communal tables and bar seating crafted from repurposed Torrey Pines trees anchor the design, giving the café a warm, natural feel while reinforcing a sense of place. A custom living wall adds lush greenery indoors, complemented by artwork that highlights recognizable La Jolla landmarks.

The indoor-outdoor flow is central to Playa Kitchen’s appeal. Three retractable garage doors open seamlessly onto a spacious patio, creating a light-filled setting that transitions easily from a morning coffee stop to a casual lunch meeting or afternoon work session. Lounge seating and shuffleboard add a social element, positioning the café as more than just a place to eat.

“Playa was designed to feel connected to its environment in every sense,” said founder Andy Masi, noting that every detail—from reclaimed wood to local artwork—reflects the character of the surrounding coastal community.

The menu follows that same philosophy, focusing on seasonal ingredients sourced from local and sustainable purveyors. Breakfast offerings range from a vegetable-forward Think Tank Bowl with egg whites, roasted mushrooms, and avocado to a classic ham, egg, and cheese croissant with a spicy aioli twist. Lighter fare like acai bowls topped with granola, fruit, and coconut caters to the health-conscious crowd.

At lunch, the menu expands to include salads, sandwiches, and bowls designed for both flavor and convenience. Standouts include a roasted herb-marinated chicken salad with green goddess dressing, a tuna poke bowl with brown rice and ponzu, and the On the Grind Burger topped with sharp cheddar and roasted garlic aioli. Beer-battered fish tacos and curry chicken wraps round out the offerings.

Beverage options are equally robust, with a full lineup of coffee drinks, teas, fresh juices, and smoothies. Flavored lattes—ranging from vanilla to lavender honey—add a creative touch, while smoothies like the antioxidant-packed Activator cater to wellness-minded guests.

Open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Playa Kitchen is designed to meet the needs of both locals and professionals working nearby. With its thoughtful design and approachable menu, it positions itself as a go-to spot where coastal living and everyday dining intersect.
