The rise of artificial intelligence is changing how people work, and for some, it’s enabling a bold new form of career multitasking. A new survey from AIResumeBuilder.com reveals that 1 in 20 full-time U.S. employees are holding down more than one full-time job. Among them, Gen Z workers are leading the way, with nearly 1 in 8 reporting that they are managing multiple roles—often with the help of AI.
The survey, which gathered responses from 3,283 full-time workers, highlights just how crucial AI has become for those embracing “overemployment.” According to the findings, 64% of workers with more than one full-time position rely on AI tools to keep up with the demands of dual employment. Tasks like summarizing meetings and documents, drafting emails, managing calendars, automating repetitive processes, and generating reports are frequently delegated to AI-powered systems.
For many, these tools are not just convenient—they’re essential. Eighteen percent of overemployed workers say they could not manage multiple jobs without AI assistance, while another 42% describe it as playing a major role in their day-to-day productivity. The technology allows them to condense workloads that once stretched over long hours into more manageable schedules. Surprisingly, most workers balancing multiple jobs report working fewer than 50 hours a week in total.
Financial motivation tops the list of reasons behind this trend, with respondents citing the need for extra income or the pressure of paying off debt. Others say they are motivated by job insecurity—either fearing replacement by AI or layoffs. A smaller share sees overemployment as a way to break up workplace monotony or as an opportunity to learn new skills across industries.
Generational divides are shaping perceptions of this practice. While younger employees see AI-enabled multitasking as a natural extension of the modern workplace, older workers tend to view it with skepticism. As AI Resume Builder career advisor Rachel Serwetz explains, Gen Z’s comfort with AI tools gives them a unique advantage in managing the complexity of holding multiple jobs simultaneously.
The survey underscores a growing workplace reality: AI isn’t just changing jobs—it’s making it possible for some workers to hold more than one.
