Seafood, Soul, and Sweet Success: Ka-wana Jefferson’s Flavor-Filled Mission with Sweet Catch BK and Lost Borough Ice Cream

Brooklyn-based hospitality entrepreneur and proud HBCU graduate Ka-wana Jefferson is making waves in the culinary world with her two standout brands: Sweet Catch BK, a fast-casual seafood and soul food eatery in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and Lost Borough Ice Cream, known for its creative and culturally inspired frozen treats.

Jefferson, who holds two psychology degrees, combines her academic training with a deep-rooted passion for food and community. Her flagship restaurant, Sweet Catch BK, is built on original family recipes and a rich understanding of social dynamics. “When I was ready to open a restaurant, I knew from the start I wanted to celebrate my culture, history, and pay homage to people who have helped make African American cuisine what it is today,” Jefferson says. Signature sides like yams, collard greens, and mac and cheese reflect recipes passed down through generations, creating a truly authentic dining experience.

As a lifelong optimist, Jefferson believes attitude is everything. “Business is tremendously difficult, requiring constant resilience,” she says. “Staying positive and motivated helps you push through challenges and setbacks with the fortitude needed to succeed.”

Sweet Catch BK stands out in Brooklyn’s crowded restaurant scene by offering a unique fusion of low-country seafood and Caribbean flair in a fast-casual setting. “Our menu and atmosphere transport customers to the low country,” Jefferson explains, highlighting the soulful yet vibrant dining experience her team delivers.

Beyond food, Jefferson is deeply committed to community impact. Her “Sweet Success” panel series offers educational forums where minority entrepreneurs share tools and experiences to empower aspiring business owners. “We host events to help members of the community with discussions on increasing ownership and representation of Black and Brown people in the business sector,” she says.

This summer, Jefferson is launching a Juneteenth-inspired rotating menu at Sweet Catch BK to honor Black heritage through food. She’s also teasing a surprise collaboration for Lost Borough Ice Cream—further proof of her brand’s creative expansion.

Jefferson’s top advice for restaurant hopefuls? “Understand that building a brand requires immense hard work and dedication… stay adaptable and open to learning… and surround yourself with a supportive network.”

With her unwavering commitment to culture, community, and creativity, Ka-wana Jefferson is redefining what it means to serve up success in every scoop and every bite.
